| It
was obvious coming into this year that the Drama Club’s senior
class members were both talented and particularly numerous. Many
of them ended up with memorable roles in The Sound Of Music. As
a high school drama club, we have the dual goals of putting on
the best shows possible while continually expanding our members’
knowledge and theater skills. But how to include the
underclassmen who were somewhat under-represented (but patient!)
in the Fall show? This is always a challenge: every Senior wants
a memorable “final show” and every underclassman deserves a
chance to develop.
The answer is A Thurber Carnival. This classic collection of short scenes by James Thurber provides a wide range of characters in variously realistic settings. The style of humor is mostly unfamiliar to today’s students while remaining accessible. As it turned out, there were as many playlets as seniors, so I suggested that the seniors might enjoy directing. Most of them leapt at the chance. The result is the collection you are watching tonight. Each director was entirely in charge of acting choices, costume choices, and interpretations of the script. I have been constantly amazed at the chances they have taken, and it has been great fun to watch the various personalities of the directors see expression in their short scenes. Every single one of them has learned a great deal from this experience, and lost sleep, and been inspired, and overwhelmed, and energized -- all part of the participating in the MHS Drama Club! [from
