In this play, put on by the senior class, Tennessee Williams portrays a man caught between the strict morality of the Victorian era, with its idealistic conception of life, honor, duty, and chastity, and the modern lust for life which is filled with a restlessness and a search for meaning outside of the patented ideals.  Alma is unable to reconcile her world of spiritual values with the world of passion and gives in to the focus of decadence.  John, the fiery, self-indulgent young doctor, cannot find satisfaction in the world of abandonment and passion so he must leave it and turn to an ordered life of research and service.  Alma and John grope to discover some means of reconciling their two worlds; the tragedy lies in their failure.
