Observations Lab

Purpose

The purpose of this lab is to observe the solubility of several substances, as well as the behavior of sulfur upon heating.

Materials

  1. solids: sulfur, table salt, iodine, potassium permanganate.
  2. liquids: lamp oil, water, vegetable oil.
  3. equipment: test tube rack, small test tubes (13), spatula(s), bunsen burner, beaker
  4. SAFETY: goggles at all times!

Procedure

  1. Put on your goggles.
  2. Put about two inches of water in each of four small clean test tubes.
  3. Use a clean spatula to put a couple of flakes of each solid in their own test tube with water.
  4. Record your observations for each solid.
  5. Repeat steps 2-4 for the other two liquids. Take your time, and present your observations in a table.
  6. Dispose of the contents of the test tubes according to your teacher's instructions.
  7. Fill the beaker with tap water.
  8. In your last clean test tube, put about an inch of sulfur flakes. Record your observations of the sulfur.
  9. Heat the test tube gently over the Bunsen burner. Be sure to hold the tube at an angle, and don't point it at anyone! Record your observations of the sulfur as it heats up.
  10. Pour the hot sulfur into the beaker of water. Watch it for a few minutes, and record your observations.
  11. Clean up according to your teacher's directions.

Write Up

This lab has no analysis section, so you only need to include a title section and two separate observation tables. Make sure they are clear and complete and super-easy to read and also correct!
