MHS AP Chemistry
The 10 Solution Problem

Purpose
You will be given ten solutions (numbered 1-10, or I-X).  Your mission is to figure out what is in each solution. Use the solubility table (Table 4.1), CRC handbook, and any other text to predict reaction products.  Since there is not a lot of any solution, use the minimum amounts necessary to see the products.  This is a qualitative lab!  The 10 solutions will be:

Cu(NO3)2 Na2S HCl NaI Pb(NO3)2
BaCl2 AgNO3 CuSO4 NaOH Ni(NO3)2

Pre-Lab
Make sure you know the NAME and color of each compound above (a compound usually makes solutions the same color as it's crystals).  Do the research, and have a list of predicted reaction products - in other words, find out what you're looking for BEFORE you do the lab!.  Don't forget that smell and texture may be big clues too!  You may find that Table 4.1 in your textbooks should be a VERY useful reference.

Be aware that two of the chemicals in this lab contain heavy metals - and you don't know which ones yet!  You may choose to use gloves, but goggles MUST be worn!

Procedure
Tape a data grid sheet directly to your lab table.  Tape a piece of plastic wrap smoothly over it.  Combine the solutions dropwise using medicine droppers.  DO NOT mix up the droppers.  When you are finished, dispose of the waste in the heavy metal bucket on the disposal cart.
